The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
It is a scary book ! In this time and age, we can't imagine women being used merely as birth machines. Being categorized according to their ability to give birth, denying them the right to read, right to earn ..it all sounds like from a bygone era. But twisted ideologies and fanaticism can actually make this happen and it happens under the pretext of protecting women and for the "greater good". The sad part is men too become victims of this system.
Margaret Atwood wrote this in 1985 and it couldn't be more relevant. Today I can't help but remember this tale when a girl has to take the blame for getting molested, when a male driver can't stand a woman overtaking him perfectly, when a women is considered worthless if she doesn't choose to give birth.
